David A. Nagel

David Anthony Nagel, 70, of Wapakoneta, died Friday, July 26, 2024. He was born July 22, 1954, the son of late William and Theresa (Niese) Nagel. He is survived by his wife, Joanne Nagel, of 2 years and 3 children, Toni Nagel Dueitt (James) of Cumming, Georgia, Andrew Sheridan of Wapakoneta, Ohio, and Daniel Nagel of Wapakoneta, Ohio; 2 stepsons, Damian Goebel (Mary) of Melville, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Riley Goebel (Kayleigh) Ituna, Saskatchewan, Canada, and 6 grandchildren, Grayson Dueitt, Katherine Dueitt, Brayden Halushka, Noah Goebel, Aubrey Schnell and Amelia Schnell, along with many nephews and nieces. He is the brother of 3 siblings, Bernadette “Bernie” (Jay) Lindquist, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Mark (Chris) Nagel, Wapakoneta, Ohio, Michele “Mick” (Scott) Carlson, Dayton, Ohio. Dave graduated from St. Joseph High School in Wapakoneta, joined the U.S. Navy in 1973 and started his career in the surface fleet completing multiple WES PACs. Dave transitioned to the submarine fleet in 1983, on the USS Florida, a trident class submarine. In 1987, Dave was commissioned to the officer candidate program and stationed on the USS Arkansas, a Virginia class nuclear propelled guided missile cruiser. This is where Dave excelled and was instrumental in the Tomahawk missile program, advancing to Lieutenant Commander and stationed at the MacDonald Douglas plant as the Naval liaison for the Tomahawk program. During the final years of Dave’s naval career, he was in command of the Naval Magazine on Guam, the Naval Weapons Station in Fallbrook, CA and the Naval Weapons Station in Earle, NJ. Dave Nagel was a sailor, a soldier, and a patriot but most of all a friend to many. Dave enjoyed scuba diving, hunting, fishing, Harley Davidson’s, and traveling around the globe from Ohio to Singapore to Guam back to Canada. He was a man of many lives and impacted many people. We are all better for knowing and loving him. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the Eley Funeral Home & Crematory, Wapakoneta, Deacon Rick Westbay officiating, with military rites following the service performed by the Wapakoneta V.F.W.
