George Henry Meier

George H. Meier, 94, of Wapakoneta, former resident of The Gardens of Wapakoneta, and resident of Vancrest in St. Marys, died at 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Mary’s, Ohio. He was born June 17, 1928 in Auglaize County, the son of Clement E. Meier and Gertrude (Schneider) Meier, who preceded him in death. On March 17, 1951 he married Mary C. Metzger, who preceded him in death August 23, 1999. Other survivors include one daughter, Barbara L. (Larry) Springer of Anna, OH and one son, David L. (Deborah) Meier of Woodstock, GA; four grandchildren: Matthew (Emily) Springer, Megan (Carlos) Crameri, Lauren (Nicole) Beecher, Cameron (Vanessa) Meier and 5 great grandchildren: Griffin, Eli and Henry Springer & Charley and Jack Crameri; 1 brother, Robert (Jean) Meier, 1 brother-in-law, Thomas (Judy) Metzger, 1 sister-in-law Connie Meier. He was preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses: Mary Lou (Don) Kinstle, 2 brothers Paul “Pete” and James Meier; brothers-in-law and their spouses Richard (Rebecca) Metzger and Richard (Eileen) Brorein. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as a mechanic and service manager for Niswonger Chevrolet and as the parts specialist at Speckman Automotive. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wapakoneta and attended St. Joseph Catholic School. He was a life member of Wapakoneta VFW Post #8445, AMVETS Post OH333, Knights of Columbus Council #1272, and also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie #691. George especially enjoyed spending time with family and many friends. He loved traveling and following his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Sat. Jan. 7, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wapakoneta with Father Michael Willig officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Wapakoneta, where military rites will be conducted by Wapakoneta VFW Post #8445. The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m., Fri. and 9-10 a.m. Sat. at the Eley Funeral Home & Crematory, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Grand Lake Hospice, Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
