John L. Anthony

John L. Anthony, 90, of Wapakoneta, died 1:45 p.m., Fri. Nov. 21, 2014, at Wapakoneta Manor with his family at his side. He was born July 18, 1924, in Celina, OH, the son of Bartholomew V. & M. Barbara (Puehlskamp) Anthony, who preceded him in death. Sept. 19. 1953, he married Gerelda J. Wahrer, and she died June 1, 2012. Survivors include, 4 daughters, Cec Anthony, Plain City, OH, Jill Anthony & Tony Thiery, Lima, Julie (Doug) Garwood, Wapakoneta, Jenifer (Ben) Cahyono, Atlanta, GA; 2 grandchildren, Jarett (Laura) Jones, & Kellen Jones, 2 great grandchildren, Kia Kohlhorst, & Anthony Jones; sisters-in-law, Joyce Anthony, & Nancy Oen, both of Wapakoneta; and numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by a 2 sisters, A. Eileen Oen, & Mary Maxson, a brother, Charles “Dick” Anthony, and 2 brothers-in-law, Tom Maxson & James Oen. John began his banking career with the Metropolitan Bank, Lima, and retired from Bank One as senior vice president of operations, after a total of 36 years service. He was a graduate of the University of Dayton with as degrees in finance and business administration. He also served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II. John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta, where he served as usher, and a member of the K of C Council #1272. His other memberships included the V.F.W. Post #8445, the Wapakoneta Dad’s Club, and the former Wapakoneta Elks. He was a former member of the Wapakoneta Country Club and volunteered at the St. Joseph Fourth of July Festival. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, golfing, and reading. Along with his wife Gerelda, they wintered in Florida for 25 years. He was an avid fan of the Wapakoneta Redskins, the St. Joseph Knights, and the UD Flyers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tues. Nov. 25, 2014, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta, with his nephew, Rev. Angelo Anthony officiating. Burial is to follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Wapakoneta, where military rites will be conducted by the Wapakoneta V.F.W. Post #8445. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m., Mon. at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home & Cremation Services, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Auglaize Co. Humane Society, the Allen Co. Humane Society, or the Wapakoneta Dad’s Club.
