Thomas R. "Tom" Oen

July 11, 1936 - February 12, 2022

Thomas R. “Tom” Oen, 85, of Wapakoneta, died 2:00 a.m., Sat. Feb. 12, 2022, at Springmeade Health Center, Tipp City, OH. He was born July 11, 1936, in Allen Co., OH, the son of the late Leonard and Edith (Hengstler) Oen. On June 10, 1961, he married Edna M. Bauer and she preceded him in death on July 31, 2004. Survivors include, 3 children, Charlotte (Martin) McGinley, Centerville, OH, Anita (Paul) Byrne, Wapakoneta, Mark (Christa) Oen, Troy, OH; 7 grandchildren, Josh (Ashle Eason) Byrne, Joel (Kyla) Byrne, Kelly Byrne, Elizabeth McGinley, Thomas McGinley, Kathryn Oen, Andrew Oen; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 infant grandchildren, David Byrne and Grace McGinley, and siblings and spouses, Rosemary (Roland “Toots”) Zwiebel and Charles (Rebecca) Oen. Tom was a truck driver for 50 years, retiring from Scot Lad Foods, Lima, Ohio. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Germany. Tom was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta. His other memberships included the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie #691, the Wapakoneta VFW, Post #8445, American Legion, Post #330, and the former Elks Lodge #1170, all of Wapakoneta. Tom enjoyed collecting antique Wapakoneta skillets and was a member of the Wagner and Griswold Society. He also enjoyed fishing, traveling, and driving anywhere with the occasional stop for ice cream. However, he most enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 18, 2022, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. Sean Wilson officiating. Burial is to follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Wapakoneta, where military rites will be conducted by the Wapakoneta V.F.W. Post 8445. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Eley Funeral Home & Crematory, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
